Free mediation through December

Get up to £500 of family mediation free until the end of the year

The government scheme offering free family mediation up to £500 has been extended and access is simple.

Earlier this year, the government offered a contribution of up to £500 towards family mediation costs, to help people resolve family law disputes outside of court.

You don’t need to apply, simply tell your mediator that you would like to make use of the voucher scheme on your first phone call. They will then request the voucher for you.

A mediator can help you come to arrangements with finances, property or child custody in the case of a separation. In court, a judge will make their own decision, but in mediation you decide, with the other party, what you’re happy with, so you stay in control.

The mediator can help navigate conflict and put the best interests of a child first. It is quicker and less stressful than going to court, with most people coming to an agreement in the first joint meeting. The mediator can also explain how to make the agreement legally binding, if you wish.

MESH are National Family Mediation (NFM) affiliated so you will receive the gold standard in family meditation, for free.

At MESH, we help people navigate conflict and come to a lasting agreement.

Whatever circumstances you’re in, we can help you find a way through it. Give us a call on 0114 698 10 60 for a chat, in confidence, or email us at enquiries@meshccs.org.uk.

The details

What can the mediation voucher be used for?

The voucher typically covers:

  • disputes regarding a child

  • disputes regarding family financial matters where you are also involved in a dispute relating to a child

  • mediations with both parties present. You do not have to be in the same room but both people must be willing to take part in the mediation.

If you’re not sure, we will be able to tell you if your case is eligible in your first conversation with us.

The voucher does not cover the costs of a MIAM (Mediation Information Assessment Meeting) but this can be covered by Legal Aid, if you’re eligible. Your mediator will be able to help you figure this out.

Do I have to go to mediation?

No, but you will be required to attend a Mediation Information Assessment Meeting (MIAM) before making a court application for certain types of family law orders, unless you have a valid exemption.

How many vouchers am I eligible for?

One per case.

What else do I have to do?

Not much! Just ask your mediator to apply for the voucher. You will also be asked for consent to share your name, the bill for mediation services and some basic information about your case with the Family Mediation Council.
